My Major Project in 3.3 is developing and builds from work done at final part of level 2 as well as 3.1 and 3.2. For those unaware of the background to my project, this focusses on loss, death, grief and memory based on my own experiences of losing a child. The work looks at the threshold of death inhabited by person about to die, those who are grieving or those who work with death. I try and interpret this liminal space visually.
Below are my latest test pieces which I would be interested to receive comments on. I am interested in a human response to a project which is challenging to me as an artist and for my audience.. As my audience, how well do you feel that my work communicates the ideas surrounding death? In turn am interested in how my work makes you feel. Would this be a subject which interested you or might you shy away from looking?
The critique I received on this selection of my work was very positive. My work using glitches was considered the ‘strongest’ image. It was thought to be not overworked. The red could represent danger which is interesting but not what I was trying to convey. Other feedback which I noted was that death isn’t nothingness. Blackness could be seen as a sign that traces and memory remain. From my images of the boy and his cat, the monochrome seemed to receive the most praise however at the same time my final image was thought to be too complex and overworked. Other images in this sequence, too distracting with no logical explanation for including fish. We spoke of the exhibition and the written word and the spoken word and of play with lights on the floor as if representing danger or maybe a dark room. I have reflected on this idea but don’t feel it fits with my narrative. I have thought about this after the feedback session and maybe what I was being told was that my presentation of the boy and his cat was jarring and didn’t sit well with other works I have previously shown.
After the critique session I received additional feedback on the running of session and on how much time others used which cut down my time. In addition it was felt that others didn’t leave space to have their questions answered and to receive feedback but insead talked over all the people trying to critique their work. An interesting learning experience going forwards.
