Liminal test pieces #6

I have been working on images I took at a concert of the crowd. I loved the way the light picked them out and how they were all looking in the same direction. In this case at tehj stage where the whole crowd was looking. It was as if as one, we were all looking and heading in same direction.

I been experimenting with these images and these are my latest attempts. The first shows the image as I originally shot it. After feedback I wanted to work on these again and introduce more darkness and variation around this darkness. Subsequent shots show selective edits where I have added in layers of some rocks with interesting textures and banding, darkening image, adjusting the curves and finally adding in some blue light.

In making these adjustments, I was trying to create a sense of the people heading into the liminal space, the unknown and uncertain, half shouded in mist or darkness or in two of my examples, lit by strange light. I like the sense of the mass of humanity acting as one, seemingly without doubt or choice, heading into that darkness. Am less sure about my attempts at strange lighting as while was interesting and fun to try, these just feel artifical and overly complex. More effective are my two attempts immediately below the original shot which used photographs I shot of interesting stones. The banding and cracks on the stones produce lighter and darker areas which serve as pathways within the presented images.

Behind all of these test images is my quest for images which ask questions but don’t always provide easy answers.
